The Avalanches have been announced as the 2020 Australian Music Award winner for their latest album, We Will Always Love You.
The winner of the $ 20,000 (£ 11,200) prize was announced at a ceremony today, March 3, hosted by Australian presenter Jane Gazzo. More than 40 judges, including artists, journalists and programmers, participated in determining the winner this year.
“We are very excited to be the winners of the prestigious AMP award and to be among the esteemed winners of the past,” The Avalanches said in a statement.
“We would love to thank everyone who participated in making this award, especially SoundMerch, as well as the many people who helped us put this record together. A really special day for us and we are very grateful.
We will always love you fell last december and is attended by the likes of Blood Orange, Jamie xx, Weezer, Denzel Curry, and is the sequel to 2016’s Wildflower, which opened at # 1 on the ARIA album chart. The LP “brims with ideas, samples and guests through its unique mix of disco, soul and psychedelic music,” note the organizers of AMP.
The album also received considerable critical acclaim upon its release. Typical of the reviews was the NME review, which praised the album for its “diversity of guest musicians, expertly woven music, and compositional strength of the tracks.”
By winning the award, The Avalanches triumphed from a short list compuesto por Tame Impala The Slow Rush, Ziggy Ramo’s Black Thoughts, Nyaaringu de Miiesha, Alice Ivy’s Don’t Sleep, Blake Scott’s Niscitam, Emma Donovan and the Putbacks ‘Crossover, Fanny Lumsden’s Fallow y Gordon Koang’s Unity.
This year’s prize money was provided by music products company SoundMerch, which in turn received the naming rights for this year’s award.
Previous winners of the Australian Music Prize include Sampa The Great, Gurrumul, AB Original and Courtney Barnett.
