The autonomous electric ship Yara Birkenland sailed into Norwegian waters

Ships should also be switched to electricity, and the first such projects are already beginning their testing phases. IN April 2018 an autonomous electric ship project has been announced Yara Birkenland, which was manufactured by Vard, Kongsberg collaborated in the development and Enova co-financed. The ship is to transport fertilizers between the city of Porsgrunn and the port of Brevik.-

Every year, this one ship is to replace 40,000 diesel truck journeys and save 1,000 tons of CO2. This route is only about 14 km away. The ship is 80 meters long and manages to transport 103 containers in one voyage. The energy for the drive is stored in a 7MWh battery and the maximum speed reaches 15 knots (28 km / h). However, the ship is not only interesting for its electric propulsion, it is also fully autonomous and, of course, developed to be able to detect other ships on the water.

For the time being, it will be in a two-year test run, which will be supervised by a human crew. If all goes well, the bridge will then be removed and the ship will sail without human supervision. It is expected that over time, the system should also take care of autonomous loading and unloading, the ship should also take care of its own charging. Yara, which is one of the biggest polluters in Norway, wants to reduce its impact on the environment not only by changing traffic but also by changing its own production. It is the largest producer of ammonia and in the future wants to move to its more environmentally friendly production (so-called green ammonia). Global ammonia production accounts for 2% of fossil fuels and generates 1.2% of greenhouse gas emissions.
