Thieves often take advantage of drivers’ inattention. For example – 23 cars were stolen with the keys left on the dashboard. And six cars had a burning engine.
The Lioness, the Granny, the Russian, the Japanese, the Soldier – all nicknames of famous auto stuntmen who have been arrested more than once. In the last two years alone, the handcuffs have snapped on the Russian’s hands three times, BTV reports.
“Since last week, the monetary guarantee has been with a lighter measure. The perpetrators of car thefts are the same persons,” Nikolay Peltekov, head of the “Crimes related to motor vehicles” sector, told bTV.
On August 20, three old acquaintances of the police, one of them a former car thief, pick up a luxury car.
According to our information, the stolen car was manufactured this year. It costs over 400,000 BGN and was parked in an underground garage of a residential building.
“Security makes it difficult for them. Barriers are not an obstacle. In order to commit a theft, sometimes they open roller blinds with devices, sometimes they break them,” Peltekov explained.
Six days after the theft, the luxury vehicle was discovered during a joint operation by the SDVR and the Border Police. The car thieves were detained next to the car and at a time when they were preparing to change the frame number.
“This is not news. It has always been a rule when the car is not sold for parts, but in its entirety. With a changed frame, thieves can register the car again and sell it,” Peltekov said.
And car thieves are getting more inventive. Sometimes they involve relatives in their illegal business. This year, for the first time, the uniformed officers of the SDVR arrested Voinika’s brother for car theft.
“He is without a nickname. He is known for dealing in narcotic substances,” explained Nikolay Peltekov.
In car thefts, one of the main problems facing investigators is the difficulty of proving the crime. That is why they want legislative changes.
