The assassination attempt against the chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev turned out to be an auto-assassination against Geshevism. The leadership of the prosecutor’s office is so incompetent that instead of writing on his eyebrows, he plucked out his eyes.
In just a few days, the story of the attack, which for the public was deeply suspicious from the beginning, turned into a complete fiasco thanks to the answers to the questions in the parliament of the Minister of the Interior Ivan Demerdzhiev, put to him by deputies from “We continue the change – Democratic Bulgaria”.
They weren’t computers, they were compotes
Geshev did not travel with a whole cortege to his Golgotha, but with a single armored car. His route was not unusual, but quite regular. His family was not in the carbut only him and his guard. The explosion was not with the power of 3 kilograms of TNT equivalent, but many times weaker. His car was much more protected than the president’s and only a headlight was damaged by a bullet that penetrated it. The prominent Israeli expert on terrorism, who carried out a site inspection, landed in Sofia just before the explosion. Or more specifically – 95 minutes before it.
The main speaker of the suggestions about the professional assassination against the state, from which the chief prosecutor and his family were saved only by chance, was the deputy chief prosecutor and head of the national investigation Borislav Sarafov. Minister Demerdzhiev practically exposed him as a liar, because of which PP-DB demanded his resignation. And they called on the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office to entrust the investigation to another body, because apparently this one cannot provide an objective investigation. And Europol wanted to get involved in this investigation.
Was the assassination staged and by whom?
As expected, Sarafov refused to resign and apologized for being misled by the words of Geshev, who said that his children were very scared. Of course, they can be scared for their father even if they are thousands of kilometers away from him. However, such self-deception is not even funny. It is humiliating. Can the state’s top investigator so gullibly announce a false circumstance about a crime of enormous public interest? And on what basis and by what procedure does he or his subordinates allow a foreign expert to the scene of the accident? Why does he announce false data about the power of the explosion, which even from the footage seemed untenable?
Such a head of a national investigation should at least bear disciplinary responsibility for his conduct. So he turns out to be more incompetent than a novice investigator! And with his carelessness, he undermines the prestige of the judiciary, for which he is subject to a sanction from the judiciary itself. Of course, apart from incompetence, it can be about something much more. “Those who staged the so-called assassination are the same who are now investigating it”said Atanas Atanasov from PP-DB.
If the investigation of the attack, which increasingly looks like it was stagedbe done impartially and professionally, it will have to reach the guarantors and perpetrators. Even if the whole truth is not revealed, but only the staging is finally proven, then the most important thing will be to illuminate the connections in it. Even if it is not entirely clear who had what motive and who helped how, it will be enough to see the contours of the cooperative. PP-DB deputy Ivaylo Mirchev, at the briefing in the parliament, for example, asked whether the Israeli expert had a relationship with well-known Bulgarian insurers.
The assassination proved successful
Whatever goals he pursued the assassination, which increasingly looks like a staging, he fails in one of his most obvious – to make Geshev an innocent victim of his cooked “political massacre” with the introduction of a mechanism for investigating the Attorney General. Because instead of putting on armor with the attack, he stripped down to his underwear. Instead of acquiring the halo of anti-mafia fighter Giovanni Falcone, he and his entire gospel guard in red togas shone like carnival clowns. Now those parties that would “reluctantly” vote for the law that would allow the Attorney General to be investigated will be made easier.
An undressed Geshev will have a harder time playing the game “you hold me but i hold you too”and there will be no one to pay to “free citizens” to carry banners “Geshev is joy”. So the assassination is actually quite successful because it is a step towards the long-stalled reform of the prosecutor’s office.
