The story of The Day Before writes another incredible chapter. After protracted issues, game delays, and only shortly after the game was released into the early access program, Fntastic is announcing its end. A short message on social networks carries a fairly clearly defined reason – it is money, or their lack. “Unfortunately, The Day Before didn’t work out financially, and we don’t have the money left to continue development. All income went to debt repayments with our partners,” studio representatives said, confirming that the game’s servers remain operational, at least for now.
Of course, the question is how long it will run, but even better, why will it run, when other parts of the message clearly state that the game will not receive any more fixes and improvements. “We invested our efforts, resources and time into the development of The Day Before, which was our first game. We really wanted to release more patches to reveal the full potential of the game, but unfortunately we don’t have the money to continue the work anymore,” say the developers. It becomes more and more clear that the game was not even remotely finished, on the contrary, the developers had their hands full with it and decided on the only one that was left of the logical variants. Release at least what works anyway, hope that players will like the concept of the game, get them to pay for early access and finish the game thanks to that. Unfortunately for the developers from Fntastic, the current form of the game has not impressed many players, and those who played the game a while ago suddenly have a rather important topic to think about.
Indeed, it is really necessary to emphasize that in the message we are quoting, there was not even a hint of a mention of how the settlement will take place with the players who, in the light of this information, will want to return their money. Because if until this moment there were words about fraud from the ranks of players who ignored the fact that the game did not ask for any money from anyone before the launch of early access, now the situation has turned very quickly. We even ignore the fact that the developers did not explicitly communicate what Early Access would look like, and instead of an honest reaction, for example, in the style that the title does not yet fulfill the vision presented in earlier trailers, they began to quietly delete those trailers from their channel. No, now we are talking about people who have paid for the game, which – unless there is an exception or an agreement with Valve – they will no longer be able to return it according to the established conditions.
The only thing the developers mention in this regard is the repeated information that they did not receive a single penny from anyone during the development, it was not possible to pre-order the game and there was no crowdfunding campaign. “We’ve worked tirelessly for five years, putting our blood, sweat and tears into the game,” the developers state. In the end, they thank you for the support in these difficult times and throw ashes on their heads that they underestimated the situation and miscalculated. “Making games is incredible hard work,” they add in conclusion and say goodbye without further details. We also note that The Day Before has not stopped selling and information at the time of writing not published on Steam.
