The commission for the assignment, change and cancellation of the names of the elements of the street and road network and the planning structure of Saratov received an application with a proposal to return the street. Sacco and Vanzetti historical name Dmitrievskaya.
In May last year, the chairman of the Public Chamber of the region Boris Shinchuk named the street after the American workers’ rights activists Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti (one of the central ones in the city) – “the clearest example of geographical cretinism.”
“The statement received is due to the preservation of history, a return to historical sources, the original name – in honor of Maria Feodorovna Dmitrieva – a person who made a tremendous contribution to the development of the regional center. This proposal was unanimously accepted by the members of the commission, ”the press service of the city administration explained.
In April last year, the authorities of Saratov in the express mode have already renamed Kirov Avenue – the most iconic and central, the former Nemetskaya – into Stolypin Avenue. The procedure for renaming the main avenue of the city took a day.
At the end of May, the same commission on toponymy decided to rename the Council of Europe Square in Saratov to the Heroes of Donbass Square.
And in October of the same year, 2022, a new street in the Aeroport microdistrict was named Alexandra Zakharchenkowho served as head of the DPR from 2014 to 2018 and tragically died in an explosion in Donetsk in 2018.
