The Authoritarian Government of Nicaragua Confiscates Assets of Church, Violates Fundamental Rights

The authoritarian government of Nicaragua has returned to its old ways and has ordered the confiscation of numerous assets belonging to the Church, in this case the Central American University of Managua, governed by the Society of Jesus.

As the Jesuits themselves have recalled in a Communiqué, unfortunately, this is not the first attack of this type suffered by Nicaraguans. The Sandinista regime has canceled 26 Nicaraguan universities in the last two and a half years, and of these, eleven have been confiscated.

This is a government policy that, for a long time, has shamelessly violated fundamental rights. In the statement entitled “In defense of truth, justice, freedom, the right to education, and in defense of Nicaragua,” the Jesuits point out the falsehoods with which the regime has tried to stigmatize the university, before proceeding to block bank accounts and immobilize various properties.

It is the usual procedure by which someone or something is pointed out, before proceeding arbitrarily against him. In this case it was enough for them to repeat fallaciously that the Jesuit university is a center of terrorism.

The times are not good for politics in many places in Latin America, not even in Nicaragua.

Therefore, it is time to promote a time of meeting, announcement and denunciation without rest, of being next to those who suffer, without looking the other way; to denounce without complexes the totalitarian regimes that violate the most basic freedoms, and to support so many brothers who suffer with prayer, remembering, as Fr. Arturo Sosa, General of the Jesuits, has done, that it is God who has the last word on history and the one who will also have it on Nicaragua.
