The aunt’s dialect became the prelude to “the first tossdan in mass”

Unofficial National Day

Who doesn’t want to munch on a good piece of “massipanta”? Jenny Antonsson

The sibling couple Jonas Sveningsson and his sister Matilda noticed how their aunt pronounced the first of March, which in the aunt’s Småland dialect sounded like “first mass”. Eventually Småland’s unofficial national day was created – the first tossdan in mass.

On Thursday it is the first Thursday in March, or as it has also come to be called: “the first tossdan in mass”. Marzipan cake – that is, “marzipan cake” as it is called on this special day – is the typical cake for the celebration of the day. The slightly unusual spelling and even pronunciation (at least for some of us) gives a clue as to what we are celebrating.
