The audiovisual Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife starts | Radio Club Tenerife

Just a year ago, families were finalizing the details of their costumes to enjoy Carnival in the street. However, the pandemic has forced the party to be transferred to the screens.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife faces an unusual edition with the display of five television programs with national and international projection, documentaries and exhibitions for carnival lovers. The Councilor for Festivities, Alfonso Cabello highlights the individual actions that have been undertaken to maintain a celebration that generates, annually, 35 million euros in the city.

“It is very important to put on the table that this money is not spent on a street party. It is spent in companies that reside here. Sound companies, lighting, scriptwriters, documentary makers … That is the money of the Tenerife Carnival” . Specifically, the budget for the celebration has decreased by 40 percent compared to last year and reaches 2.3 million euros, of which 850,000 are destined to provide aid to all groups and designers of the Carnival.

Cabello has responded to opposition criticism that points to a waste of public money. In this sense, he pointed out that “if I announced 1.4 million euros for subsidies to companies, we would applaud, but if we give them work, we are in these … There is an easy criticism that is being made (…) “.

The council has also decided to strengthen security to prevent the spread of the virus. The mayor has insisted that “we cannot relax in the slightest. The response of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has been to activate and authorize enough extra hours of the Local Police so that they can be both this weekend and next active in the streets avoiding any bad idea. ”
