NEW YORK (Dagbladet): Pence was responsible for leading the session in Congress that day to approve Joe Biden as the next president of the United States.
Trump had previously claimed without any documentation that the election was stolen from him as a result of extensive election fraud. He had also put tremendous pressure on Pence as if to make him try to reverse the election result – even though the vice president did not have the authority to do so.
Earlier January 6, Pence made it clear that he would not try to reverse the result. Trump responded by appointing him a scapegoat while asking his supporters to march to Congress.

New documents
It ended in the deadly attack on Congress in which five people lost their lives. Several police officers were seriously injured. Surveillance camera footage shows Pence and his family being rescued at the last minute as angry protesters walk around Congress shouting they want to “hang Mike Pence.”
Now the news agency has AP obtained new internal documents from the US Department of Defense in the Pentagon. They provide a new insight into the timeline around one of the most dramatic days in the history of American democracy.
After being led to safety by Secret Service agents, Mike Pence called Trump’s acting Secretary of Defense, Christopher Miller. There, Pence is said to have tried to take control.
– Empty the congress building, begged Pence from a secured room, according to AP.
The call came at 16.08 local time and lasted only one minute. Here, Pence stated that Congress had not been secured, and he asked to hear a deadline for when the building could be secured.

Several asked for help
By this time, rebels had trampled around Congress for two hours, shouting that they wanted to kill both Nancy Pelosi and Pence.
Elsewhere in Congress, Democrats’s Senate Leader Chuck Schumer and Democrats’ speaker Nancy Pelosi called other military leaders with similar requests. They requested that the National Guard be deployed.
“We need help,” Schumer pleaded in a conversation more than an hour after Trump supporters threatened to enter the Senate.
However, it took several hours before the situation came under control.
The new timeline again shows the chaos and panic that prevailed during the attack on Congress.
At the same time, the documents show that the then president, Donald Trump, did not seem to do anything to get the situation under control. Thus, the situation had to be handled by Pentagon leaders, some White House advisers, Congress leaders, and Vice President Mike Pence.
Trump himself gave a speech to tens of thousands of supporters outside the White House at 12 o’clock on the fateful day before the attack on Congress. There he asked them to march to Congress. and they listened to him.
The police forces, which were supposed to protect the Congress, were completely overwhelmed by violent attackers. At 1.49, the then police chief, Steven Sund, asked for assistance from the National Guard.
20 minutes later, the first rebels began to enter the Congress building, where they also inflicted major property damage.
A large number of politicians – both Republicans and Democrats – begged Trump to ask his supporters to stop the attack.
Only at 4.17 pm did Trump tweet that his supporters should “go home and go in peace”.
It was not until 8 pm that day that the congress building was declared secured.
Next week, elected representatives in Congress will hear testimonies from the Inspector General of the Congress Police.
– I want to know why about every single minute that was lost, says the Democratic senator and leader of the Senate’s administration committee, Amy Klobuchar, according to AP.
