The Athletic Performance of Ligue 1 Clubs and Players: Analysis and Rankings

Before the resumption of the championship, the LFP took stock of the athletic level of Ligue 1 clubs and players. Endurance, speed, distance… all the measurements from the first four days of the 2023-2024 season have been compiled in order to establish top 10s (individual and collective) for each statistic. Of course, it’s crucial to keep in mind that this data only relates to a four-game sample, and therefore may vary greatly throughout the season.

Twirling Canaries.

While FC Nantes was in seventh place in the ranking of teams having achieved the most sprints per match last season, Pierre Aristouy’s men climbed onto the podium at the start of the season. Indeed, behind RC Lens (168.3) and AS Monaco (165.3), the Jaune-et-Vert are third, with an average of 155.8 sprints per match after four days of the championship.

Even more impressive, this statistic shines through on an individual level, since two FC Nantes players are in the top 3 of the fastest players in the championship. Very close to exceeding 36 km/h Moses Simon (35.97) and Kader Bamba (35.95) complete a podium dominated by Marseillais Jonathan Clauss (36.11). Surprisingly, Kylian Mbappé is not in this top 10.

An inexhaustible recruit.

Far from panicking the counters with his top speed, a new Canaries player stands out for his endurance. Increasing the number of trips in front of the Nantes defense, Douglas Augusto is among the players having covered the most km/match at the start of the season.

Behind the former Canary Adrien Thomasson (13.51 km/match), the new number six of FC Nantes is in second place among the players who run the most in Ligue 1 (13.24 km/match). He is also second in the ranking of players having run the most during a single match (13.37 km covered against OM). Only Johan Gastien (Clermont Foot 63) did better: 13.52 km against Monaco and 13.42 km against Metz.

More collective efforts.

In the top 5 teams that ran the least last season (16th), FC Nantes started this 2023-2024 season with a much higher intensity. Beyond its ranking (12th out of 18 teams), the club from the banks of the Erdre seems to have moved up a notch on an athletic level. With a collective average of 118.7 km covered per match, Pierre Aristouy’s men are several steps ahead of their average from last season (113.7 km/match).
