ASV Rurtal Hückelhoven has had a two-faced season: At home, coach Damijan Migdal’s team was a force, winning nine of their ten games; away there were only three wins. The bottom line is sixth place, two points behind fifth. This was decisive for the new season: The teams in places two to five qualified for the newly created district upper league, which is created with the Krefeld-Grenzland handball district between the state and district leagues.

In the second half of the season, the people of Rurtal showed what potential they have: ASV won seven of their ten games in the second half of the season. Due to the sometimes clear victories against promotion aspirants such as Welfia Mönchengladbach (39:26), TV Beckrath (30:27) or HSV Rheydt II (33:26), the sixth in the table earned the reputation as a fright of favourites.

That was good for the season

In their own hall, the ASV was hard to beat – the black and white only lost once in Hückelhoven. “We have the spectators to thank for that,” said Migdal. The Hückelhoven defense was almost ripe for promotion: With an average of just over 24 goals conceded per game, ASV had the second-best defense in the league – just behind champion ATV Biesel II. “I was very satisfied with that,” said coach Migdal. The offensive also worked particularly well against the top opponents, such as in the 39:26 thrashing of Welfia.

That was not so good in the season

In the end, the downside is that they missed the leap into the district league. In the end, the two defeats against fifth-placed TV 1848 Mönchengladbach were the decisive factor – especially the 26:27 defeat a week before the end of the season.

Goalkeeper Henrik Bürger was the strongest man in the squad. With outstanding defense rates and tricks such as caught seven-meter penalty throws, he repeatedly proved his class. “My goalkeeper was the best player on the team – to be honest,” says Migdal.

At the end of July, the team started preparing for the season. There will also be some returnees, and goalkeeper Bürger will probably stay. “It’s not all settled yet, but I hope he stays,” says Migdal. In the upcoming district league season, the ASV is aiming for the top positions: “The top three is our goal. Promotion is also possible, but first we want to finish in the top three,” says Migdal.
