After the arrival of mobile phones with folding screens on the market, the innovative technology also reached portable computers. In 2022, the Asus launched its proposal for this sector: the Zenbook 17 Fold OLED.
It is a portable computer with hybrid characteristics, as it can be used in tabletbut the big focus is its folding screen of 17.3 inches. When folded, the device becomes the size of a small laptop. 12 inches.

When closed, the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED has 33 millimeters at the thickest part. This value does not follow the current trend of ultralight portable computers, which do not exceed 19 millimeters in thickness. The largest rarely exceed 25 millimeters.

Image quality is good, but sound requires improvement
The strengths of OLED technology it’s the bright colors and deeper black levels, and the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED display is no exception. The only drawback is your glossy coating. Although reflections are subdued, the screen builds up quickly nasty fingerprintsespecially when the device is used in tablet mode.

Keyboard has some issues

During use, the keyboard showed some problems. Often, the keyboard is not immediately recognized and is blocked by the device, especially when exiting standby mode.
On such a slim keyboard, key travel is noticeable, but it lacks any backlighting.
The device is expected to automatically turn off half of the screen when the keyboard is docked. However, some applications were launched in full screen mode. The issue was resolved by manually detaching and reseating the keyboard.
It is most likely that these are “failures of youth” and, therefore, it is hoped that they will be corrected in a future firmware update.
The keyboard has a USB-C port dedicated for charging and a switch separate to turn it on and off. The keyboard must be charged periodically, and the battery life is about 12 hours.
Autonomy prepared for several hours of use
When choosing a portable computer, the autonomy is one of the most relevant features to consider. When using the “desktop” mode (i.e. full screen), the battery lasted about 14 hours during a session with common applications. no longer portable mode (that is, with half the screen off), the battery lasts about an hour longer.
A long battery life achieved by the energy efficiency of the “Ultra Low Power” processor and the OLED technology of the screen allow a whole day of work away from home or long trips without the constant worry of finding an electrical socket to charge the computer.
Is the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold worth buying?
Os laptops with 17-inch screens have their own niche of users. In this case, the consumer is faced with a hybrid between a laptop, a desktop replacement, and a large tablet.
A 17-inch screen can be really useful, especially when considering the 21-, 24-, and 27-inch monitors that are used for desktop work. However, the high cost of 3999 euros of this computer is a factor to take into account if you only use it for normal office tasks.
If, for professional reasons, you cannot do without a large screen, the Asus Zenbook 17 Fold OLED it is a device to consider.
