The Astros take out the Mariners after more than six hours of play

With an agonizing home run from Dominican rookie Jeremy Peña, the Houston Astros beat the Seattle Mariners 1-0 on Saturday and advanced to the Major League playoffs in a game that recorded a record 17 innings without goals.

The Astros and the Mariners battled for nearly six and a half hours of play in a crowded T-Mobile Park in Seattle (47,000 spectators) in the first game in playoff history to go to the 18th inning without the score moving.

The Astros, champions in 2017 and finalists in 2019 and 2021, ended up winning thanks to Peña’s providential home run in the 18th inning and finished this series of divisions of the American League 3-0 overall.

Houston will now play its sixth consecutive league series against the New York Yankees or the Cleveland Guardians. The winner of this tie, best of seven matches, will receive a World Series ticket.
