In 2020, several important anniversaries related to the name of Aspazija and Rainis took place – the 155th anniversary of both poets, as well as one hundred years since Aspazija and Rainis returned from exile in Switzerland on April 10, 1920. Celebrating these significant events, readers are offered a voluminous excerpt from the two poets’ “letter novel”, which consists of 118 items of correspondence. Letters for publication, as well as comments and indicators attached to the publication have been prepared by Dr.hcphilol. Gundega Green.
The dialogue in the letters between the two spouses tells of the period from September 1906 to December 1911, when one or the other of the poets was outside their place of political refuge in the village of Castanola. The most significant part of the correspondence of this period is the intensive exchange of letters between the two poets since the end of September 1911, when Aspasia is staying in Zurich for a long time, where he starts a healing course in the private practice of doctor Betty Farbstein.
The correspondence of Aspazija and Rainis in the early stages of the southern exile documents the events of the poets’ daily life, the process of creative work and the contacts of both exiles with their contemporaries. This part of Aspazija’s and Rainis’ novel also shows the first serious difficulties in their relationship, which lead to a gradual alienation between the two spouses.
All the letters of both poets, also previously published, are offered to interested parties in new, clarified transcripts, in which typographical errors and textual inconsistencies have been eliminated. The letters are accompanied by detailed textual passports, in-depth comments close to modern reality, as well as indicators of the persons and periodicals mentioned in the texts.
Both the latest and previous publications of the correspondence can be read in the section of the Memorial Museums Association’s website “Museum Articles”.
