Omar Khayyam was born on May 18, 1048 AD in Iran. His full name is Ghiyath al-Din Abu al-Fath Omar bin Ibrahim al-Naysaburi al-Khayami.
He spent part of his childhood in the city of Balkh, in northern Afghanistan, while studying under Sheikh Muhammad al-Mansouri. After that, he studied under Imam Muwaffaq Nisaburi, who was considered one of the greatest teachers of the Khorasan region.
Khayyam had notable works in geometry, especially in the theory of proportion. He was an educated Persian, a mathematician, a philosopher, an astronomer, a physician, and a poet. He wrote treatises on mechanics, geography, and music.
Khayyam, a mathematician who noted the importance of the binomial theorem, was also part of the team that introduced several reforms to the Persian calendar. Khayyam’s poetic works outshine his fame as a mathematician. He wrote about a thousand four-line phrases or quatrains.
Omar Khayyam passed away on December 4, 1131 in Nishapur, Persia, now known as Iran.
