The Aspas Association (Association of Parents of People with Intellectual Disabilities) returns this Saturday to the stages of Santiago with the return of the musical Peter! We fly! It is the adaptation of Peter Pan, the famous story by James Mattew Barrie. For this representation, at 9:00 p.m. in the Auditorio de Galicia, 998 seats have already been sold. “The people who make up the cast are emotionally very intense and have a liberated fantasy,” says his Director, Quico Bouza, a 69-year-old retired professor, when discussing the cast. “Fantasy works very well with them. What we do is fly and try to take the audience with us into that whole fantasy world”.
Peter! We fly! has evolved thanks to the imagination and efforts of a cast of actors and actresses whose ages range from 20 to 60 years. Apart from its protagonists, some forty volunteers collaborate to enrich the show with lights, makeup or scenery. The Balancé academy also participated instructing the cast during one of the three days a week dedicated to preparing for tonight’s performance.
“The cast’s ability to memorize and discipline surprised me a lot”tells EL CORREO GALLEGO Vanesa Otero Pérez, director of the Balancé dance school.
“They know their roles very well and know the script by heart. They do not carry pointers and there are those who know two different characters. There are participants with quite serious disabilities and that they know the entire script of an hour and a half play seems incredible to me”.
It is not the first time that this representation is faced. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Aspas association, its premiere was held on September 16, 2017 with an attendance of more than 900 spectators. The long standing ovation received then encouraged them to continue their tour of other places in Galicia such as Negreira, Pontevedra, Rianxo and Cangas, part of a tour that the Covid pandemic slowed down. The return to the stage Peter! We fly! marks the continuation of a show that has a promising outlook. “We are now in contact with the municipalities of A Coruña and Ferrol, but nothing has been finalized yet,” reveals Quico when asked about the future of the project. The play is one of the great successes of the Association of Parents of People with Intellectual Disabilities (Aspas).
