Archaeological research under the guidance of archaeologist Rūdolfs Brūžis lasted from June 15 to September 24 this year. According to the congregation, it made an invaluable contribution to the identification and preservation of cultural heritage for future generations, helped to reveal the identity and portrait of the ancient Tukums farmer.
The pastor said that a large amount of archeological antiquities was found during the research. These include coins, brooches or fragments thereof, knife blades, belt details, ceramics, luxurious headdresses, building components, etc. In the next phase of the cabinet work, antiques have been cleaned, cataloged and systematically researched. Archaeological excavations covered an area of 80 square meters near the northern and eastern part of the church. At the end of this year, antiques will return to Tukums residents – they will be stored in the collection of Tukums Museum, Zeiferts said.
Several burials and so-called bone chambers have been discovered near the church. In total, eight bone chambers and several hundred individual skeletal bones have been discovered historically.

Archaeological research works and the second phase construction project “Reconstruction of the northern and eastern wall foundations of the church building, construction of the outer edge vertical waterproofing, drainage and rainwater drainage system” are implemented by obtaining funding in project tenders announced by the State Culture Capital Fund and the National county council funding and Tukums Evangelical Lutheran Church co-financing.
The total investment in the projects to be implemented this year reaches 49,795 euros, the final completion of which is scheduled for October.
