President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) opened the ASEAN Intercultural and Interreligious Dialogue Conference (IIDC). In his remarks, Jokowi said that the world community is now increasingly irreligious.
“On the other hand, in the religious field, the world community is starting to become less and less religious,” he said Jokowi at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, South Jakarta, Monday (7/8/2023).
Jokowi said, according to the IPSOS survey, 29 percent of respondents from 26 countries stated that they were agnostic and atheist. In addition, the number of violence in the name of religion is increasing.
“The survey from IPSOS Global Religion in 2023 of 19,731 people from 26 countries in the world showed 29% stated that they were agnostic and atheist and according to Pew Research Center data in the name of religion and belief the number of physical violence is increasing,” he said.
Nevertheless, Jokowi believes that the ASEAN community has an increasing religious enthusiasm. Indonesia, for example, Jokowi said the country he leads is a country whose people believe in God the most.
“Ladies and gentlemen who I respect, I believe that the ASEAN community actually has an increasing religious enthusiasm. Indonesia, for example, is a country with the most people believing in God and the highest number in the world and according to the Pew Research Center, 96% of respondents in Indonesia believe that moral whether it is determined by belief in God,” Jokowi said.
For information, IIDC 2023 is a series of the ASEAN Summit which this year is chaired by Indonesia. The event was attended by religious leaders from 11 countries. This forum has a number of discussion agendas that will be presented by 15 speakers from abroad and 11 speakers from within the country.
