Laris Strunke was born in Riga in 1931, in the family of the well-known Latvian artist Niklāvs Strunke. From the very first steps of his childhood, there was an art environment around Lari. It was like a window to the world, to which he approached, both unconsciously and attentively, he perceived colors, words, sounds, ornaments, shapes, light. The progress of life in Latvia was destroyed and destroyed by the occupation and the war, when the Strunke family went along with the others as refugees. Sweden became Lara Strunke’s future home.

Studied at the Academie libre (1952-1954) and the Konsthögskolan (1954-1959) in Stockholm. Since 1959 he has participated in exhibitions and solo exhibitions in Sweden, Latvia, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Hungary, Iceland, Brazil, Canada, China, Australia, Singapore, Italy, Mexico, his works are in museums and private collections in Sweden, Latvia and elsewhere in the world. . Laris Strunke has received significant awards in Sweden and Latvia. He was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, also awarded the Order of the Three Stars of Latvia.

Laris Strunke represented a very independent thread of development in contemporary Swedish art and is one of the few Latvian-born artists who, having brought the name of another country to the world, has gained wide international attention. The artist has created and co-created his creative method in the direction of painting close to abstract expressionism, evaluating its ranges, learning about the oldest and newest world and local traditions, peculiarities and nuances. Laris Strunke consistently and persistently implemented her personal concept of the values ​​of form and the significance of space, thus participating in solving general painting problems.

The creative work of Lara Strunke will remain in the history of art. “In turn, memories of his strong, independent character and immeasurable belief in the highest ideals of art will continue to live with us, who had the honor of getting to know the artist personally,” writes the Latvian National Museum of Art.

The artist Laris Strunke will be expelled on November 18 from Adolf Frederick’s Church in Stockholm.

The Latvian National Museum of Art expresses its deepest condolences to the relatives of Lara Strunke and his admirers of his work in Latvia and Sweden, accompanying the artist to the world.
