A French court has convicted a Belarusian man who attacked the tomb of Vincent Van Gogh, north of Paris, with a shovel. It is about an artist, but his stunt was not appreciated.
A video shows how Aleksej Kuzmich brought a spade to Vincent Van Gogh’s grave in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, on July 29, the day of the Dutch artist’s death. The 36-year-old Belarusian artist is dressed in white and has also put a flower on his face and hands. “My friends,” he says to some of the cemetery’s onlookers. “You are filled with sorrow. And I understand that. I myself cannot live in a world in which the artists have disappeared. But that is now going to change. “
“The artist returns,” says Kuzmich, after which he sticks his spade in the ground and begins to dig. “Artist, it’s time to get up,” he shouts several times as he continues to dig. He then apologizes to Van Gogh for his failure, after which the arrest is shown.
The French authorities cannot laugh at the man’s stunt. He was therefore ordered to leave the country, fined 3,000 euros and given a suspended prison sentence of one month. It will not have helped that Kuzmich had already had contact with the law in 2021, when he went to the Elysée with a fake Molotov cocktail and pretended he was going to set it on fire. He also came into contact with the authorities elsewhere with his stunts.
The question now is what will happen when he returns to Belarus. He could face persecution there by the regime of President Lukashenko.
