The art project “Source of Power” / Article has started with the flag created by Līga Spunde

On July 1, a flag created by the artist Līga Spunde was hoisted on the mast of the art center “Noass”. This event begins art project “Source of Power”. Eight artists of different generations will each create their own variation of the flag as a symbol, gesture or means of expression. –

The curator of the art project “Source of Power” is Kaspars Groševs. A year ago, his exhibition “Autonomia” took place in this art center, where there was a flag in each tank of the ship, also fluttering on the mast. At that time, the outlines of the new project emerged. “The flag is a multifaceted and wide medium. The idea arose to continue in several parts with the participation of other artists. We continue the tradition of raising the flag. Every three weeks, an artist hoists his flag, ”says Groševs in the Latvian Radio program“ Kultūras rondo ”.

The curator has chosen to involve artists who think in a variety of media,

and they are – Līva Rutmane, Anna Malicka, Kristiāna Marija Sproģe, Jānis Krauklis, Maija Kurševa, Margrieta Griestiņa, Ieva Putniņa. The flag “Clubhouse” in the digital drawing of the artist Līga Spunde is the first to fly on the mast.

The flag depicts a kind of mosque party, and it is also a reference to the not so old “online” and “zoom” parties. An image called a gremlin takes part in this party. Probably many people know this from 80’s movies. I find it very interesting to mention the historical origins of the Gremlin, which is much older – already during World War II, these mosques were blamed for various technical failures. [..]. Especially in this age of technology, when the internet is too slow or something is not going as it should in those “zooms”, I think no one has noticed that gremlins are present, “says the author of the” Clubhouse “flag.

Līga Spunde estimates that although the flag is not an ordinary medium, it is definitely extremely interesting and has great potential.

Kaspars Groševs also sees its different nature in the flag – a means of expression, a symbol, a medium, a gesture. Artists, in his opinion, use it more as a page to express themselves on, it is a grateful format.

When the flags placed on the facade of “Noass” change, there will be a small discovery of a musical event – such a scope of the process, adds the curator of the art project “Source of Power”.
