What does it mean to lose your memory? How confused would it be if you recognized and realized that forgetfulness and loss yourself? Florian Zeller’s film “The Father” (2021) describes the loss of memory and the great pain it causes through Anthony, a patient with dementia. Anthony’s favorite opera music helps the audience empathize and makes the film shine. The opera aria that appears most often in films is the work of the French musician Georges Bizet (1838–1875). This is the aria “Your voice, which is familiar to my ears”, from the opera “Pearl Clam”. It flows into the scene where Anthony listens to music with a headset, her daughter calls father in a nursing hospital and her daughter leaves her father. My heart is touched by the desperate melody.
Bizet is known for his works “Carmen” and “Suite of the Lady of Arles” and “Pearl Fishing”. However, he is considered a “genius of doom” representative. He showed extraordinary talent from an early age and it seemed that only one flower road would unfold in his life. However, his life wasn’t as smooth as expected. He even died at the young age of 37. Maybe that’s why Bize’s music is sadder and more pathetic.
Bizet has set new records since childhood. He was so talented and at the age of 9 he entered the Paris Conservatory, where the geniuses of music gather, as the youngest. I initially applied for admission at a young age, but it was postponed because I was too young. Even after he entered the conservatory, he won first prize and went on to win.
At 17 I wrote my first symphony. He is said to have been the second youngest student to write a symphony while attending the conservatory. Subsequently, with the support of the French government, he won the “Grand Prix of Rome”, which allowed him to study in Rome, Italy, for four years, and left for Rome.
Bizet, who had been exposed to various music such as opera in Rome, seemed to have only one thing to do for success. However, the religious music “Te Deum”, which was his first work, received negative reviews. Then, when I heard the news that my mother was in critical condition, I had to go back to Korea. Due to the death of her mother, she returned to Paris and began to work seriously a year later.
“Pearl Clam Catching”, which debuted when she was 25, is an opera containing a sad love story. It doesn’t quite fit Anthony’s situation in the film, but it is similar in that it faces deep despair and tragedy.
Spearfishing begins when two men, Nadir and Jurga, fall in love with the priestess Leia. However, they both decide to give up their hearts for the sake of friendship, and Nadir sets out on a wandering journey. And years later, Nadir returns to his hometown.
However, Nadir hears a voice somewhere and recognizes that it is Layla’s voice. The air that comes out at this moment is the ‘familiar voice’. “The sound of that song still lingers in my ears / The sound I heard while hiding under the pine / His voice soft and roaring like a pigeon’s song / Oh! Enchanted night, divine ecstasy / Oh! Seductive memories, Crazy intoxication, sweet dreams “This aria is considered the most beautiful of the French arias of the 19th century.
When Nadir and Leyla fall in love, Jurga tries to kill them. However, when Zurga discovers that the girl who saved her from danger in the past was Leila, she decides to protect their love. But when the priestess’s love is forbidden, the couple is in danger. Eventually, Zurga sets the village on fire, then escapes the chaos and is executed for himself.
The story is interesting and the air is beautiful, but this piece was also unsuccessful. Critics criticized it as “an opera that followed the style of Verdi and Gounod” and audiences didn’t pay much attention.

Then there seemed to be a sign that the atmosphere was about to change. The “Suite of the women of Arles”, which consists of the music of the play “Woman in Arles”, has received a good response. However, contrary to expectations, Bize felt frustrated again. I tried to do it again in Opera, but he failed. There was a sudden fire at the Paris National Opera and I was unable to load it.
Today the opera “Carmen” also failed, considered Bizet’s representative work and a masterpiece. “Carmen” is the love story of a gypsy, Carmen. Carmen is in love with the soldier Don Jose, but she is attracted to the bullfighter Escamilo. Then, the tragic story of Don José becoming jealous and killing Carmen.
Bizet, who suffered from constant failures, worked all night thinking that only ‘Carmen’ should succeed. But in the end, when this work also failed, Bizet was heartbroken. It is said that the public was very angry that the work was about a gypsy as the protagonist.

And “Carmen” became Bizet’s last work. After the premiere failed, he died of a heart attack. It was because I was swimming in poor condition due to night work and was overworked.
After Bizet’s death, ‘Carmen’ was loved all over the world. It attracted many spectators from Europe and America. “Habanera” in the operas, “The Matador’s Song” and “Flower Song” also gained great popularity.
Bizet’s life, who has suffered from constant misfortunes except for childhood, is pitiful. But even when his livelihood was threatened, he tried to protect his musical world until the very end. At that time, many musicians followed the works of Wagner, but Bizet went his way. “Imitation is what fools do. The bigger the work to imitate, the more ridiculous it is.”
It is not easy to keep up with your philosophy without giving in at any time. Especially when things that should have worked repeatedly fail. So, you will want to find a more comfortable and easier way. However, if you keep your beliefs and dignity as Bizet to the end, maybe one day your efforts will pay off.
