The Arrival of USS Michigan (SSGN-727) in Japan Highlights US Commitment to Indo-Pacific Region

In the middle of last month, the nuclear submarine Michigan (SSGN-727) arrived in the Republic of Korea for the first time in six years. A few months later, an Ohio-class submarine paid a visit to Japan.

What is known

Michigan (SSGN-727) arrived at the port of Yokosuka. The submarine’s visit reflects US commitment to the Indo-Pacific region and complements exercises that US forces are conducting with Japanese allies.

Michigan (SSGN-727) is one of 18 Ohio-class submarines and one of four that are equipped with 154 Tomahawk cruise missiles rather than nuclear-tipped ballistic Trident IIs. She was ordered in 1975 and entered service in 1982.

Guided missile submarines provide strike and special operations capabilities. Michigan (SSGN-727) has a displacement of more than 18,000 tons, a length of 170 meters and is one of the largest submarines in the world.
