As the law enforcement officer told reporters, the drug is likely to be cocaine, but the results of the tests must be awaited to confirm this.
Radziņš mentioned that a merchant who has received a consignment of bananas with drugs is actively cooperating with the police and providing all the necessary information. There are two stores where banana boxes with drugs are delivered in Riga.
He said that if the white powder is cocaine, it is the second largest cocaine seizure in Latvia.
To date, the largest drug consignment seized in Latvia is about two tons of cocaine, which the police found on a farm in Koknese.
It has already been reported that in January 2019 Kokneses was found in a private house in the county cargo with 42 cardboard boxes shipped from Ecuador. The boxes contained 2195 briquettes with various logos – “TNT”, “Badboys”, “Gold” and a picture of a dolphin. Several Latvian citizens were detained for committing a criminal offense.
The Delfi portal wrote that the day before Christmas, a security service of a retail chain approached the State Police, informing that In two stores in Riga, packages with white powder were found in banana boxes under this fruit. During the proceedings, the VP removed 168 packs of a cocaine-like substance.
It has been established that the product was imported from South America and that there is active cooperation with the companies that received the particular batch of bananas. There are currently no detainees in the criminal proceedings; the investigation is ongoing.
As VP’s representative Radziņš pointed out to the portal “Delfi”, the police have several versions of the investigation and it is necessary to understand whether these drugs were intended for the Latvian market or whether it was a logistical error.
