A dark-skinned 17-year-old boy was caught traveling in a bus at Helsinki’s Rautatientori metro station on July 4, 2020.

The ticket inspector asked the boy without a travel ticket for personal information, but the boy ran away from the inspector. He was chased by a law enforcement officer, who caught the boy.

The boy resisted the arrest to such an extent that the orderly officer knocked him to the ground and handcuffed him while waiting for the police.

Now the boy’s mother has received a verdict from the District Court of Varsinais-Suomen.

Claimed to be abusers

The mother shared videos and pictures of her son’s arrest on social media.

Among other things, he claimed that the ticket inspector and the security guard were guilty of abusing his son. According to the mother, the boy’s white friend, who also did not have a travel ticket, was not subjected to similar treatment.

He considered the actions of both to be racist and demanded that they must be fired from their jobs.

The allegation of abuse was not true. According to the decision issued by the police in September 2020, the ticket inspector and the security guard were not guilty of a crime.

The mother also compared her son’s arrest to the case that led to the death of the American George Floyd.

The mother made several publications about the topic on social media, where they spread to a wide audience. The writing continued until February 2021. The case was also discussed in the media.

The ticket inspector and the janitor could be identified from the social media posts. They received inappropriate yelling and contacts.

The organizer said that the situation caused him intense anxiety. He suffered from insomnia and was diagnosed with an adjustment disorder, due to which he had to take sick leave.

False claims

The District Court of Varsinais-Suomen found that the mother had made insulting and derogatory statements about the ticket inspector and the security guard, as well as outright false claims about the violence against her son. According to the court, the duo’s actions were not racist.

The district court sentenced the woman born in 1966 to a 60-day fine for gross defamation. Of these, he became payable 360 euros.

The court ordered the mother to compensate both men 6,000 euros for the suffering she caused. In addition, he was ordered to compensate the order supervisor 500 euros for temporary inconvenience.
