The arrest of ‘Cabo Gil’ was a pending issue with the government: parents of the 43

Melitón Ortega, spokesman for the Committee of Parents of the 43 Ayotzinapa students who disappeared in 2014, said that the re-arrest of Gildardo López Astudillo, Cape Gilone of the regional leaders of the Guerrero Unidos Cartel in Iguala that year and who is identified as one of the main people responsible for the disappearance of the young people, was one of the proposals that the families had made to the federal government since the first meetings they had.

In a brief interview, he explained that although they still do not know the details of the re-arrest of the man who was one of the protected witnesses of the current government, the relatives of the students “had proposed that new investigation files and accusations be put together” to arrest him, after he was released in December 2019 by a federal judge for allegedly being the subject of acts of torture in the investigation of the case, between 2014 and 2015.

According to federal information, Cabo Gil was arrested yesterday with two arrest warrants, one for organized crime and another related to the Ayotzinapa case.

“Let’s see what information I can get after this,” said Ortega at the end of the Ayotzinapa National Popular Assembly, which was attended by representatives of various organizations and groups.

Regarding the meeting, he mentioned that they have called on “all sectors that have been with the movement” to participate starting on September 18 in the mega march that will take place in Chilpancingo, Guerrero, and with which they begin the day of struggle for the 10 years since the disappearance of the normalistas, which moves to Mexico City starting on the 23rd of the same month.

He also said that “there is a massive call to gather in Mexico City” for the national march on September 26, which will start at the Angel of Independence and head to the Zócalo in the capital.

In this regard, Ortega recalled that the demonstrations carried out year after year by the students’ families “have been symbolic and a peaceful struggle. We have no other proposals than the demand for truth and justice. Our voice will continue to resound in the situation of the presentation of the 43 alive.”
