The Arrest of a 16-Year-Old in Connection with the Destruction of a 300-Year-Old Landmark Tree in Northern England

British police have detained a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of cutting down a 300-year-old white sycamore tree in Northumberland National Park in northern England. This tree is called one of the most famous landmarks in the country, reports BBC News and The Guardian.

The tree grew in a natural depression in the landscape near Hexham and appeared in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, starring Kevin Costner.

Police called the tree a “world famous landmark” and said its loss had “caused significant shock, sadness and anger in the local community and beyond.”

Police officers and park workers at the scene said they believed the tree was cut down with a sharp chainsaw by someone who knew what they were doing. Local residents said that they heard nothing at night due to strong winds from Storm Agnes, and woke up to see that the tree had split off from the stump.

A 16-year-old teenager was detained on suspicion of cutting down a tree. Police said he is in custody and is assisting officers with their investigation.
