Last week, KNAB arrested the mayor of Valmiera. A day later, he was released again, without setting any security measures, except for mumbling… This last vulgar word means that the detainee must not publicly express himself about the questions asked by the investigators. What exactly could Jānis Baiks be telling or justifying to someone now, if it is also clear – quoting our Prosecutor General – honest people are not detained anyway… However, some “buts” are required here.

If detention is used as an investigative method, then one should still take into account the consequences – even if it is something as small as reputation. For example, Baiks can now not take a shower or a sauna at all – he will not wash off that sad show in masks under any circumstances, no matter how the process progresses.
So – someone made a decision that this kind of procedural action is decisive. What is interesting – this “someone” will have nothing to do with it, if in the end it turns out that, due to lack of evidence or otherwise, the guilt of the alleged offense will not be proven. And Baiks will be able to shout from the stage of the Valmiera Theater or the stands of the Daliņa Stadium – I am not to blame! – but it will never cancel the symbolic fact of arrest itself, and thus the suspicion. Never.

It is not known whether the mayor of Valmiera wanted to avoid the investigators, or ran away for weeks along the banks of the Gauja river, or hid in the swamps of Seda for months – we do not know that. But we know that he was detained. Loud. Was it necessary? We don’t know. It is not our competence and duty to know, but – Baika was arrested… In fact, this means that… he is probably guilty. Because detention is not something of a series – wouldn’t you like to come and talk? You are very welcome! They come after you and collect. Was Baik uncooperative with investigators? It looks like they didn’t even get there. Laced up in cool peace. Suspects of fraud of European funds on a large scale, because the 4 million mentioned in this connection is a big hit…
But – why is Baik not given any security measures? Forbidden to meet with any persons, because there were allegedly more than five of them there? A ban on leaving the country, or a ban on meeting with your party members? A colleague from the public radio wonders: it all looks funny, but the case has already been initiated by the European Prosecutor’s Office – I wonder if they can be disbelieved… Do you feel how simple it all is? Our KNAB has nothing – they only detained. The case started in Europe… Pag, pag, pag!
Then let’s play fair – on both sides. Let’s say, the mayor of Valmiera with his allies has shot so many bucks that the European Prosecutor’s Office could no longer withstand it and that is why this process was created. By the way, it was the beginning of June when they handed over the papers to the Latvian side to start the pre-trial investigation. It is now the middle of September. Count the months on your fingers. Baik is a suspect… But the author of these lines allows himself to say just as easily that KNAB employees and the European Prosecutor’s Office should also be suspected.
About what? For sabotage, for sabotage, for undermining the European security space. I will explain in more detail. One of the cooperation agreements being drawn up in the Valmiera industrial park is related to the Finnish military industry company that produces armored personnel carriers. It is known that one part of the works or parts is made by this company in Valmiera. It is a concrete memorandum of intent between the parties, which Baik and his lawyers must present in Brussels – if the Latvians want to apply for a co-payment from the European Regional Fund (ERAF).
Seeing that the European money will be used for purposes that strengthen the military complex of the Baltic region, which would increase its power, firstly, Finnish competitors in this sector would get stuck, because the free market also looks tempting to them, and secondly, the Russian special services stand on the back foot. Putinists have no interest in someone’s life in Valmiera or Helsinki looking like cranberries without powdered sugar, if not chocolate. This is unacceptable for Russia – just as they did not accept the expansion of NATO due to Finland and Sweden. But now – the salt itself! Diversion.
Those who think that the European Prosecutor’s Office, unlike Macron or Merkel, are some kind of official distributors of clear spring water, are deeply mistaken. If a Russian can corrupt European politicians, some officials – whether they are hot dogs of the Brussels administration or the cabbages of Luxembourg’s rule of law – are not a convertible cent better.
Let’s be honest – there are heaps of them, just as their interests, weaknesses, addictions, hobbies are piled up in heaps… The special services even have to make a casting to decide – which one of the bunch to eat, because it’s a competition for the fattest morsels of the food chain. When the war in Ukraine started, we learned a lot about the chronic desires of the so-called old women – the socio-political elite of the big European countries. And why would the Valmiera industrial park be ignored here, if the military complex stands out on its background – the military industry, which is under all radars in wartime.
For the Russians, it would be not only a principled fight, but also a strategic, existential one. It wasn’t so long ago that one mysterious production caught fire near the Riga airport – supposedly drones – which belonged to the same industry that I have already mentioned here in several lines? An accident? Oops… Torpedoing Valmiera’s story is even easier. A legally correct submission to the European Prosecutor’s Office on the suspicion that something is cheating in Latvia. The investigation is directed to Latvia’s so-called colleagues, who have been waiting for this signal for a long time. Then you need a few months for reflection, or for the synchronization of operational activities.
How I liked that public television was the first to find out about Baik’s arrest – how many times the path has been trodden… And then they already put up with the fact that the mayor of Valmiera didn’t even manage to dig up fishing worms on his vacation, not to mention such a small thing that he could have been led to this issue quietly – just to clarify. Did not lead because the purpose of the action was not to find out or investigate. These actions should have been formed as an unconditional accusation, so that it is clear to the public from the first minute that Baik is beaten in all possible ways. This also explains why the “New Unity” failed to protect the mayor of Valmiera from this drama in all its glory, because the execution of this process was not related to the interests of the Latvian state.
It is KNAB’s own fault that they can be held in such suspicion, because since some former office workers entered politics with their black folders, there are not many illusions about the real intentions or application of this organization. Juris Jurašs is only the most visible cobweb of these networks – but we still have many employees of such security structures who sort it all out on the side.
The fifth column has never felt so comfortable in Latvia, because along with the geopolitical upheavals, there is a growing interest in the services of certain groups with specific price lists. Order a search? A public mask show? Imitation of a crime? Publicity doesn’t even have to be guaranteed in this pack, as it automatically results from the abandoned bone. But the very idea – to shake or compromise the environment related to the Baltic security concept – is covered up with loud slogans about corruption, about the fight against European money laundering and the like. And those Finns who produce armored personnel carriers are beaten on our side not for the first time… Coincidence?
If the city of Riga knew who had to give a million in order to achieve something concrete with the blind Temida, then the city of Riga also knows how to present a gross economic diversion as the personal greed of a Vidzeme city mayor. Given the current conditions and the dependence of our security institutions on the Russian special services – it’s good that some are caught from time to time – such a simple first course is prepared here by a vanka and raimondinš of any department, not to mention inesitas, baibinas or andinas. But the people will be smeared with a fairy tale about the Valmiera criminal group.
Say the author is rambling… Yes. But why can’t these nightmares be compared to the others? To those who say – let’s let the investigators work now… Work? If they had worked, they would have at least demonstrated such professionalism that we would not know anything about such investigative activities. Then they – those investigators – would really achieve some direction, movement, meaning. But the arrest of Jānis Baiks, who is currently marked and painted, would take place only after the court finds him guilty. Can’t we? Obviously. Are we pretending? Let’s pretend. It can’t be that they are the only ones playing with the instruments, but I will give them to the others when they… learn to play… The boys overdid it? Baik was unlucky… Maybe.

Because for now you are… Just as much as Baik is suspicious, the so-called special technical performance of corruption fighters is just as suspicious. Earn another version. For example, I doubt that a man can get pregnant… What does this have to do with the Valmiera scandal? There is already salt that the Valmiera case is incoherent and illogical according to all the visible, publicly available parameters, which, first of all, were determined by the investigators of this case. They know more? Precisely because they know more, they have to do their work more neatly and responsibly. Maybe the people need opium, but it does not cancel the professional standards of the trade.
PS By the way, since no money from Europe had yet been received and spent in this regard, the Valmiera City Council decided last week that they will continue to build this industrial park without all the funds.
