n### Alma al-Shaab: A Beacon of Hope amidst Devastation in Southern Lebanon
The picturesque town of Alma al-shaab in southern Lebanon, known for its scenic Mediterranean coastline and bougainvillea-draped streets, has become a symbol of resilience in the face of overwhelming destruction. Despite the catastrophic damage inflicted on the region, residents have begun returning to their homes, carrying with them a glimmer of hope for the future.
According to Lebanon Debate, the town has suffered extensive losses, with 90 homes completely destroyed and approximately 200 others partially damaged. The infrastructure, including electricity, water, and roads, has nearly collapsed, leaving the community in dire straits.
One of the mukhtars of Alma al-shaab highlighted the dire situation, stating, “The people resorted to individual initiatives to secure the minimum necessities of life, in a step aimed at establishing the foundations of steadfastness and survival. Though, the challenges appear enormous with the agricultural sector being greatly damaged, especially after the burning and uprooting of vast areas of olive groves, threatening a major source of livelihood for the population.”
The agricultural devastation has hit the community hard, as olive groves, a vital source of income, have been decimated. This has left many residents struggling to make ends meet, further exacerbating the already precarious economic situation in Lebanon.
In an interview with lebanon Debate, the mukhtar emphasized the critical role of the Lebanese army in maintaining security and stability. “The people are relying heavily on the Lebanese army, which they see as the only guarantor of security and stability at this critical stage,” he said. He also called on the President of the Republic, General Joseph aoun, to take decisive action, stating, “There are repeated calls for the President of the Republic, General joseph Aoun, to bear responsibility and support the people of the south through practical steps that facilitate the procedures for returning to homes and accelerate the reconstruction process.”
The mukhtar further stressed the importance of forming a new government capable of addressing the region’s challenges. “With this reality, southerners, especially the people of the town of Alma al-Shaab, are looking forward to forming a new government quickly, capable of developing comprehensive action plans that address the challenges. Reconstructing the south is not just a humanitarian issue, but rather a national responsibility that requires concerted official efforts and popularity to ensure the return of the affected areas to normal and secure a decent living for the people,” he said.
In addition to local efforts, the mukhtar highlighted the urgent need for international support.“In addition to local efforts, there is an urgent need for support from the international community and humanitarian organizations to support Lebanon in this ordeal. Providing material and technical assistance for reconstruction can contribute to alleviating the enormous burdens placed on the local population, especially in light of the tough economic situation it is suffering from,” he emphasized.
