The Armed Forces of Ukraine will receive a second battery of brand-new German Skynex air defense systems: What will it bring to Ukraine

Skynex, the manufacturer of air defense systems, announced the start of production of two batteries in December 2022. It took one year to complete the order.

Ukraine will soon receive a second Skynex air defense battery, but this does not mean that the number of means for shooting down Russian missiles and Shahed-136 kamikaze drones will significantly increase in the Armed Forces. The installations are capable of neutralizing targets at extremely close distances and will protect the object of critical infrastructure. Details of new deliveries of military aid from Germany were reported on the Defense Express portal.

Experts of the portal noted that the German government announced the provision of Skynex batteries to Ukraine. In fact, it is the second of two batteries promised by the manufacturer Rheinmetall in December 2022. Then the entrepreneurs announced that they had received a contract worth 182 million euros for two Skynex air defense systems.

Defense Express explained what it means for Ukraine to receive the second of the two promised batteries:

  • the battery is capable of covering a critical infrastructure facility somewhere in Ukraine from subsonic missiles and Shaheds of the Russian Armed Forces;
  • the radar is capable of detecting a target at a distance of up to 50 km, after which the anti-aircraft guns shoot down air threats at a distance of up to 3-6 km, firing at a rate of up to 1,000 rounds per minute;
  • The Armed Forces will receive four more 35mm caliber installations that launch Ahead programmable ammunition, “invulnerable to the effects of electronic countermeasures during a shot”;
  • launchers, the X-TAR3D radar station and the control unit are able to work autonomously, as well as interact with other air defense systems.

Experts also noted why they believe that the first Skynex battery is already in Ukraine. In particular, they mentioned the statement of the representative of the company Rheinmetall Italia, made in January 2024. According to the businessman, the delivery took place at the end of 2023 in accordance with the agreement concluded in December 2022.

Weapons of the Armed Forces — features of the Skynex air defense system

Skynex is an anti-aircraft missile system manufactured by the German company Rheinmetall. It became known about the development in November 2021. During the presentation, the system managed to destroy a swarm of drones. In addition to the rate of fire and Ahead missiles, which are not knocked down by EW, the installation has another advantage. In particular, one target shot down by Skynex costs 4 thousand euros, while a target shot down by an IRIS/T air defense system costs two orders of magnitude more — 300-500 thousand euros.

On the YouTube channel of the Rheinmetall company, they showed how the Skynex air defense system works. The video does not include footage of the actual operation of the system. Instead, there is an animation that illustrates the possibility of protecting cities and oil production facilities from air threats — aircraft missiles, sea-based missiles. The complex consists of a control console, a network of sensors, a radar and launchers.
