The counter-offensive of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is gaining momentum through the use of cluster munitions received from US allies. About it writes military columnist for the German edition of BILD Julian Repke.
For more than a year, the Russian army had fire superiority along the entire front in Ukraine, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine basically delivered only pinpoint strikes in response, since ammunition was always in short supply. However, in recent days, according to BILD military observer Yulian Repke, the picture has begun to change dramatically: now it is the Ukrainian army that covers the concentrations of Russian troops with artillery fire.
This is facilitated not only more than 400 155 mm artillery pieces provided by Western countries, but also transferred from the US in large quantities of cluster munitions.
Numerous videos taken by Ukrainian drones show that cluster shells are used by the Armed Forces of Ukraine everywhere. According to Repke, the Ukrainian military is using up to five cluster munitions per group of Russian soldiers, combining artillery shelling with conventional grenades and drone attacks.
The agreement to ban the massive use of cluster munitions was signed by 110 of the 193 UN countries, but neither Russia nor Ukraine is on this list. The RF Armed Forces have been using cluster shells since the very beginning of the invasion of Ukraine.
Repke notes that if at the beginning of the counteroffensive, Ukrainian troops mainly attacked in small groups under the cover of tanks, now they rely more on suppressing the enemy with artillery fire.
“Sometimes we need ten to twelve artillery shells before a well-defended machine-gun nest of the enemy is opened,” one of the fighters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine tells BILD.
