The areas of greatest seismic risk in the United States

The United States Geological Surveys (USGS) has more sensors in California and Nevada, the states with the highest seismic risk in the country.

Specialists point out that earthquake probabilities “They are determined from the average rate of historical events.”

The Geological Survey published a seismic hazard map where you list the states most at risk of being affected by an earthquake in the next 50 years. “Maps are used to help define safe building codes, help first responders plan their actions after an earthquake, and influence insurance rates,” they write.

Earthquakes are not just a California problem. The danger is especially high along the west coast, but also in the west between mountains, and in parts of the center and east of the country.

The states with the most risk areas are:  Alaska, Arkansas, California, Hawái, Idaho, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, Oregón, Carolina del Sur, Tennessee, Utah, Washington y Wyoming.

The Californian cities of San José, Vallejo and San Diego register a greater threat due to geological faults in their territories.

According your portal data, this is the probability that an earthquake will occur in the area of Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay.

Los Angeles area

Within the next 30 years the probability is:

  • 60% of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake

  • 46% of a magnitude 7 earthquake

  • 31% of a magnitude 7.5 earthquake

San Francisco Bay Area

Within the next 30 years the probability is:

  • 72% of a magnitude 6.7 earthquake

  • 51% of a magnitude 7 earthquake

  • 20% of a magnitude 7.5 earthquake

The report noted a sharp increase in the number of magnitude 3 earthquakes, “potentially driven by hydraulic fractures in states like Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas,” they explain. Your data is the result of a 100-year record. Here you can read the report.
