Music (Germany 2020, first broadcast) The ARD New Year’s Eve concert is usually a live broadcast. In view of the current pandemic situation, concert recordings by the SWR Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Teodor Currentzis, will end the year instead. A top-class program which, in its diversity and emotional depth, offers scope for your own reflection. The ARD New Year’s Eve concert will be moderated by Thomas Gottschalk and Teodor Currentzis.

Teodor Currentzis, Thomas Gottschalk

The full spectrum of the SWR Symphony Orchestra: A symphony from the deepest Russian soul, as Rachmaninoff’s second symphony is called, composed at the beginning of the 20th century, which still belongs to the late Romantic period. Review and foresight, doubt, resignation and departure – the themes of this concert evening reflect the most important motifs of the crisis year that is coming to an end. You can hear the first three movements with the famous Adagio at the end, which seems to have fallen out of time and forms the emotional climax of the New Year’s Eve concert.

Then the contemporary piece “The Riot of Spring for Tape and Orchestra”, a twelve-minute super crescendo by Dmitri Kourliandski, which, in the moving interpretation by Teodor Currentzis, has lured the audience out of reserve. And finally a jump into the Baroque era with Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber’s Battalia, a suite for strings and basso continuo. Everything is offered here: faithfulness to the work, joy in playing, musical surprises and making music at the highest level. The playing of Patricia Kopatchinskaja on her violin is peppered with unusual musical moments, an exceptional artist who is “Artist in Residence” with the SWR Symphony Orchestra this concert season.
