The Archbishop of San Francisco institutes a monthly Tridentine Mass in the cathedral

|

In response to the papal motu proprio Traditionis custodes, the Archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, has announced that every month a fixed mass will be celebrated according to the Extraordinary Form in the cathedral itself.

Cordileone has taken note, above all, of a key aspect of the papal document, precisely the one that justifies the first two words that make up its name: the bishops are, truly, the guardians of tradition. And His Holiness delegates to them the power to apply the restrictions that he implacably imposes on the celebration of the Traditional Mass.

So the Archbishop of San Francisco has taken responsibility. His first reaction, the day after the document was promulgated, Cordileone made clear in a message to the faithful the appreciation he feels for the community of those attending Traditional Masses in his archdiocese and confirmed that their celebrations would not be altered at all.

And yesterday he instituted a Traditional Latin Mass every month at Our Lady of the Assumption, Cathedral of San Francisco and has led the faithful in a Litany of Reparations for the abuses against the Holy Eucharist.

The monthly Mass will be celebrated on First Fridays at 3 in the afternoon, “an appointed time for this Mass, commemorating the moment when Our Lord Jesus Christ died to save us from sin and death.” The first of the Masses, the next day 4, falls on the Feast of Santo Domingo, so it will be celebrated according to the Dominican rite.

Cordileone points out that he has decided to institute this Mass in response “to the requests of the faithful and the overwhelming response to the first Mass in Latin that was celebrated in July.”
