Arab League secretary-general Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned on Thursday that Israeli violations in the Occupied Palestinian Territories are escalating to such an extent that the situation could erupt before the eyes of the international community, which appears to have abandoned its responsibility to achieve vision of a two-state solution through negotiations.
Aboul Gheit stressed, during his opening speech at the Union for the Mediterranean conference held on Thursday, that “emerging global crises must not obscure the problems and crises afflicting the Arab region, to which is added the cause of Palestine , which cannot be ignored or marginalized, as the Palestinian people suffer from an occupation regime that can only be described as apartheid.”
He called on European countries to recognize the Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In the same context, Aboul Gheit met with the Irish Secretary of State for Rural and Community Development on the sidelines of the conference, and praised Ireland’s supportive and positive stance towards the Palestinian cause, especially its recent vote in favor of the resolution of the General Council of the United Nations Assembly on Israeli practices that harm the human rights of the Palestinian people.
The General Assembly Resolution asks the International Court of Justice for a legal opinion on the legal consequences of Israel’s continued violation of the Palestinian people’s rights to self-determination.
