The silent and inconspicuous drone is great for special tasks in forest buildings and plantations, although it has several disadvantages.
Ukrainian military personnel have begun using Black Hornet Nano in miniature unmanned aerial vehicles. The Kruk Operator Training Center published in Facebook recall of one of its graduates with the callsign Technician.
He noted that the proprietary remote makes it very convenient to control the Black Hornet Nano with one hand, even with the right, even with the left. Video from cameras, a thermal imaging camera, and telemetry data is streamed to a tablet that comes with the drone. The image quality is good enough to see people at a short distance, but due to the small size of the cameras, it is significantly worse than models from DJI or other manufacturers.
The main advantage of the Black Hornet is their invisibility. According to Tekhnik, the UAV under the control of the Armed Forces of Ukraine flew 10 meters away from a group of Russian soldiers, who never saw or heard from it. The device works very quietly and due to its small size can only be seen from 50 meters against the sky or from 20 meters between trees or buildings.
A Black Hornet Nano complex includes two types of helicopters: one is equipped with two optical cameras, and the second is equipped with a thermal imager. The developer has provided convenient pockets for carrying drones, a tablet and a remote control.
“A fantastic highly specialized drone for further reconnaissance of premises, landings and territories to which the group will be traveling at this time.
Only for units that are already equipped with other drones and need them in a *#@&k. Definitely not a replacement for Maviks, Mattresses and fpv. Completely different classes and use cases,” the Technician summed up.

Previously Norway and the UK have donated small Black Hornet drones to Ukraine from Teledyne Flir. Helicopter-like UAVs were developed for fighting in cities and in confined spaces. The cameras transmit images with a resolution of 640×480 pixels and images with a resolution of 1600×1200 pixels, allowing reconnaissance in close proximity to the enemy.
Recently The APU showed Black Hornet Nano in action. Operators were able to insert the device carefully into the hood during training.
