The year 2020 is drawing to a close. Reason enough for us to look back once again to see what has actually happened in relation to Apple in this Corona year. Our review does not claim to be complete. It starts in January, when Apple appears at CES and promotes HomeKit, Epic Games is proud of 120 FPS with Fortnite on the iPad Pro, and we ask ourselves whether the Mac will remain a problem child.
At the beginning of the year it was already becoming apparent that Apple was satisfied with TSMC’s work as a processor manufacturer. Rumor has it that the partner is allowed to manufacture the A14 chips for the iPhone 12 exclusively.
Apple and HomeKit at CES
At the same time, Apple continues a trend. The company is ramping up marketing for other business areas. It sends employees to the consumer electronics show. There they present Apple’s ideas for the smart home and more privacy thanks to HomeKit. An advertisement on a hotel in Las Vegas caused a stir. Apple was already there in 2019, but before that, the Cupertino company had not been there for 27 years. But other manufacturers are also promoting their new HomeKit products on site.
App Store as usual, Apple with continuity
“Same procedure …” – Apple reports on new sales records over the Christmas holidays and on New Years in the App Store.
In addition, Ireland’s Prime Minister Tim Cook honors Apple’s commitment to the country. Because the iPhone manufacturer has had its own location in Cork for 40 years. In neighboring Scotland, on the other hand, there seems to be no mercy with the iPhone. On closer inspection, however, everything is not so wild.
Fortnite at 120 FPS on the iPad, Tim Cook and AR
From today’s perspective, January is almost absurd. Because Epic Games published an update for Fortnite on the iPad Pro and proudly showed that you can achieve a better refresh rate on the Apple tablet than on Xbox One or Playstation 4. Times can change that quickly.
Plus, Tim Cook never tires of stressing that augmented reality is going to be the next big thing.
Rumors that come true
Also in January it is said that Apple will present the upcoming iPhone in “Navy Blue”. That rumor will come true ten months later. It is said that Touch ID will not return in the power button until 2021. In fact, Apple will bring this solution to the iPad Air 4 as early as 2020.
To this day, however, James Bond is still waiting for Apple to sign him. Towards the end of the year, this topic comes up again, and we find out that MGM was also in talks with other companies, but wanted moon prices for its table silver.
Even more records and thoughts on the Mac
In January the world actually looks different. Because Apple reports new record numbers for its Q1 2020. Among other things, Nintendo’s mobile games are a cash cow.
This month we ask what we should do with the Mac and discuss whether the move to ARM can be a lifebuoy. At the end of the year we know that the change is far more than that. Because Apple is swimming freely and can drive innovation in the PC market in the coming years without the shackles of Intel, a company that somehow only looks like a dinosaur of Silicon Valley.
