Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Suez Canal, which connects the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, Egypt, is totally stuck. According to local officials Wednesday (24/3/2021), this happened after a Panama-flagged ship named Ever Given ran aground and closed the shipping route.
The ship was chartered by Taiwanese shipping company Evergreen Marine. Allegedly, the ship tilted and turned around due to strong winds.
The ship’s power was cut off, but no crew was injured. Even so, shipping traffic was paralyzed and queued up to 100 ships behind it.
From the @OSINTtechnical Twitter account quoted by a number of foreign media, you can see how the ship was “caught” in the canal. Satellite images show this too.

It was also reported that all available tugboats in the canal zone assisted in the evacuation of ships. The Egyptian government itself says it will take at least two days for things to normalize.
The Suez Canal is one of the most important trade routes in the world, through which about 10% of all international maritime trade passes. According to the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), there were nearly 19,000 ships or an average of 51.5 ships with a net tonnage of 1.17 billion tonnes during 2020.
