The AP-HP and the AP-HP Foundation support paramedical research

Paramedical research has been booming since 2010, the date of creation of the PHRIP (Nursing and Paramedical Research Hospital Program) funded by the Ministry of Solidarity and Health, which allows paramedics to benefit from new research funding and the same support as medical research. The AP-HP and the AP-HP Foundation are two key players in the development of this discipline, which is no longer reserved exclusively for the medical field. They help improve the quality of care offered to patients by improving practices day after day.

Paramedical research: its specificities

This clinical research in care is carried out and coordinated by nurses, nurses, speech therapists, physiotherapists, psychomotor therapists, psychomotor therapists, occupational therapists, manipulators, radio manipulators, … they aim to improve the care of all patients from neonatology to geriatrics and from the most complex to the rarest diseases. The results of this research have a direct impact on the quality of care and on the quality of care for hospitalized patients in our hospitals or at home.

Motivating for paramedics with projects, it allows them to advance the knowledge and practices of their professions and to have links with other professionals and professions of the AP-HP.

AP-HP, an ideal place for paramedical research

Since the creation of the PHRIPs, the AP-HP has encouraged and supported all its paramedical professionals to carry out this research work. Since 2010, more than 360 research projects / letters of intent were deposited, which represents 25 to 30% of letters of intent filed nationally.

A privileged place to be able to carry out paramedical research in good conditions, the AP-HP allows project investigators to benefit from a multidisciplinary approach with a high availability of resources. From the emergence of the idea, from clinical fields, the professional is supported in his approach by paramedical coordinators of paramedical research. They are there to support them from idea to project and enable them to mobilize skills that promote success within medico-university departments or Clinical Research Units. Thus, the paramedical professional will be guided in his approach and accompanied by methodologists, statisticians, great specialist professors.

« I really benefited from the encouragement, the support of the AP-HP and the facilitation of the process… It’s important to say that because in all honesty, I don’t know if I will have done this. approach or if I would have been through to the end if I had not been supported in this way. » Flora, nurse and PHRIP project leader

The time-research passport, a primordial and unique lever of the AP-HP

To give the decisive impetus to all project leaders, to allow them to really dedicate time to develop their research protocol, the AP-HP launched the Time Passport Research in 2017, in order to capitalize on the hours devoted to the creation of these projects.

The AP-HP Foundation wants to encourage caregivers to embark on their research projects, by valuing the time devoted to the completion of the letter of intent (by paying them each € 260 in 2020 for a letter of intent). intention) and the time dedicated for a letter of intent + a PHRIP (by paying them € 910 in 2020).

« To develop their research project, paramedics need training, method, creativity but also a lot of availability. This is the issue of the time-research passport. » Sophie Le Maire, Director of Development, AP-HP Foundation

« The Research Time Passport recognizes the investment in time required for paramedical research. It gives a decisive boost to all project leaders »

Marie, speech therapist and PHRIP project leader

Since 2018, the AP-HP Foundation has supported more than 70 paramedics for a total amount of nearly € 52,000 for these three years.

The Doctorate program in paramedical and midwifery research

To promote and support research by paramedics and midwives, the AP-HP has been funding professional doctorates since 2010.

This system allows all paramedics and midwives of the AP-HP to complete a doctoral thesis, for 1 year, renewable for 2 years, full-time.

A call for applications is sent out each year. After a pre-selection on file, the candidates are auditioned by a jury. Since 2010, AP-HP has supported 24 paramedical and midwifery doctoral students.

Paramedical research, a major impact on the quality of care offered to patients

With the support of its donors, the AP-HP Foundation finances this mechanism which has already enabled the launch of dozens of projects since its creation in many areas, and in particular:

  • for better management of pain in infants in pediatric intensive care by evaluating the contribution of ultrasound identification when placing a peripheral venous line;
  • and for more appropriate management of straight stroke with the development of a communication assessment tool;
  • or even better pain management by testing the effect of yogatherapy compared to conventional physiotherapy in moderate axial spondiloarthritis, etc…
