Ten years ago, “Grand Theft Auto V” was launched. Ten years on, and at the time of writing, the only knowledge we have about the sequel comes from leaks and the announcement of a trailer next month. This takes a lot of time. Since then, children have been born, degrees completed, and careers established. However, the dream of another Grand Theft Auto has remained alive.
This time, however, the hype may be too much for even Rockstar to handle. There were high hopes leading up to the release of Grand Theft Auto V, but at that point we had only been waiting five years, if you consider that we had already gotten Grand Theft Auto V in The Ballad of Gay Tony and The Lost and Damned IV” expansion pack, it will be even shorter. Since Grand Theft Auto V’s launch, we’ve only had online updates, and even if they contain a lot of content, it’s not like Rockstar’s usual clever satires of the American Dream.
We’ve seen dangerous hype before, as gamers anticipate the Second Coming of Christ and each game takes a while to release. Cyberpunk 2077, Starfield, etc. are all great games that look even worse due to their own marketing and fans’ belief that the game will be transcendent. The same goes for Grand Theft Auto VI. Even if Rockstar tried to quell the hype, it’s been too long, and Grand Theft Auto is simply too big for people to believe in the game.will become a gamemaking it nearly impossible for developers to meet this hype.

I say almost impossible because I believe it can be done. There’s a reason Grand Theft Auto V still sells millions of copies, Red Dead Redemption 2 has one of the tightest narratives ever created in gaming, and that reason is Rockstar quality. The open world we explored, the characters we got to get to know, and the gameplay that never got boring even though most of the main missions consisted of going to locations and shooting men, all add up to a winning formula that will keep fans satisfied. Throw in some improved graphics, sweet cars, and more, and that’s what Grand Theft Auto VI D050f931f53f549b3a591684e804bb80e needed to do in order to present itself as the successor to the game that dominated the industry for the past decade.
However, no matter what, there will be people who want more and believe that the game has more to offer. It’s important to remember that, for our own sake, we can’t let the hype get to us too much. We’re all guilty of this, but Grand Theft Auto VI Grand Theft Auto VI is going to be just another Grand Theft Auto game. Don’t expect to see the face of God when the installation is complete. We get an interesting story, lots of explosions and car chases, and a world that feels lifelike. If you expect more than this, be prepared to be a little disappointed. It’s hard to weigh expectations before we’ve even seen a trailer, but in order to not end up like a toxic Twitter bot, it’s best to keep the hype in check.
We also got our first heroine in the mainline Grand Theft Auto game in Grand Theft Auto VI, which set off some alarm bells. Rockstar has made incredibly solid female characters before (Sadie Adler being a key example), but a few different groups were concerned about how to handle this. Crazy people on the internet think we’ll “woke” because of this decision, while more legitimate concerns wonder if this is a fair portrayal of women. Either way, Rockstar has a reputation for writing better stories and characters than most games, so if we stick with a female protagonist similar to the ones in the Assassin’s Creed games, it feels as though more could be done.

So, does Grand Theft Auto VI live up to the hype? It has a decade of work to do, and fans won’t expect real improvements in many mechanics. Fortunately, Grand Theft Auto V leaves some great foundations behind, but even if Rockstar succeeds on all fronts, some will complain that the game doesn’t bring their beloved childhood pets back to life. Hopefully the game will show us more of what we’ll see sooner or later, as leaks have some thinking it won’t live up to expectations, and the final product will almost certainly be better.
