The anti-terrorism police in Tunisia questioned Ghannouchi, leader of Ennahda, and Ali Al-Arayed, leader of the party

Rached Ghannouchi, head of the opposition Islamist party Ennahda, and party leader Ali Larayedh, appeared outside a police station to investigate what his party claimed to be terror suspects.

Dozens of protesters, including lawyers and political activists, gathered in front of the Bouchoucha police station in the capital, Tunis, to protest against the interrogation of Ghannouchi, who denounced the control of broad powers by President Kais Saied and the its dissolution of Parliament.

On Saturday, Ennahda officials said police had interrogated Ghannouchi and Ali Larayedh, a former prime minister, suspected of “sending jihadists to Syria”, without further investigation.

The Tunisian authorities have not released any statement on the reason for the summoning of Ghannouchi and Al-Arayedh.

Last month, authorities arrested a number of former security officials and two members of the Ennahda movement on charges of traveling Tunisians for “jihad”. Mohamed Farikha, former leader of Ennahda and owner of a private airline, was imprisoned in what has become known in Tunisia as the case of the “deportation of jihadists to Syria”.
