The answers to your questions

In order to fight against the spread of the coronavirus, since this Wednesday noon, Belgium entered containment. What does this confinement mean for the Belgian population? RTBF tries to answer any questions you have about the decisions made.

In summary, the watchword is “Everyone must stay at home as much as possible to limit outside contact”.

Vou can leave your home to:

  1. ATller in a grocery store
  2. Go to the doctor
  3. Go to the pharmacy
  4. Go to the post office ATM
  5. Go to the bank counter
  6. Go to the gas station
  7. Provide assistance to vulnerable people.

Which stores are open?

Non-essential stores are closed except:

  1. Bookstores
  2. Hair salons (one client at a time)
  3. Night shops (until 10 p.m.)

They must of course respect social distances.

All food stores remain open, and stocks are sufficient.

Stores selling mainly animal feed are covered by the definition of food stores and may remain open.

I want to garden, can garden centers and nurserymen stay open?

No, they are not listed as essential stores.

What rules in supermarkets?

Access to supermarkets will be controlled in order to limit the number of people inside at the same time (maximum 1 person per 10 m² and this, for maximum 30 minutes per person).

Markets are closed, unless they are essential for the food supply and to the extent that the local authority can guarantee measures of social distance.

What about restaurants and chip shops?

With regard to restaurants, delivery and “take away” are permitted. But some brands have decided to close their doors, such as Mc Donald’s, Burger King or Quick.

Sandwich shops, chip shops and snacks remain open. Their owners must avoid queues and organize them outside. On-site consumption is however prohibited, including on the terraces of these establishments.

Can I go out? And how?

Outdoor physical activities (walking, running, cycling) are recommended but only between people living under the same roof or with a friend and limiting contact with others (1.5 meters away)

Any gathering is prohibited.

Public transport must be organized in such a way that social distance can be guaranteed.

Taxis and alternative taxi services can continue to operate but must limit the number of passengers and adopt improved hygiene measures.

Cars, scooters and shared bikes are still allowed.

Breakdown companies remain available during the week as well as during the weekend.

Can I travel?

Travel outside of Belgium which is not essential is prohibited until April 5. The borders are however not closed.

Can i work

Companies of all sizes can continue their activities provided that they organize the telework to the fullest or if they can guarantee social distancing measures. If this is not possible, they must close. In the event of non-compliance with this measure, sanctions will be applied.

This does not apply to crucial sectors and essential services.

And at the level of schools and nurseries?

The cribs remain open but many precautions are taken, even if children who do not show any symptoms can continue to attend nurseries.

Classes in primary, secondary schools and universities remain suspended.

A reception service should always be organized for children whose parents work, for example in the health care field, and for children for whom it is not possible to organize a daycare other than the grandparents.

If you have no other solution, you can entrust your children to a family member, a relative or an independent carer. All solutions that do not involve vulnerable people are acceptable, specifies the Crisis Center on its site.

What about leisure?

All gatherings (parties, etc.) are prohibited. Museums, cinemas, theaters, animal parks, etc. are closed.

Libraries remain accessible en week, but only to collect books. Reading rooms and computer rooms must close.

Can i move?

No, moves must be postponed.

What about weddings, burials and religious ceremonies?

Civil marriage ceremonies in the municipality can be celebrated, but not religious ceremonies. Wedding celebrations should be postponed.

Burials can be organized in an intimate circle.

To prevent the spread of the virus, religious ceremonies will not take place. However, the premises remain open to individual visitors.

Are the hotels open?

The hotels, holiday homes, holiday centers, guest houses, etc. remain open, but not their restaurants. Room service is authorized.

Is the garbage collected?

Recyparcs throughout Wallonia are closed from Wednesday 18 March until further notice. Door-to-door collections are still assured.

What about parking fines?

They are suspended in Brussels.
