The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed, on Thursday, that it had made a mistake announcing the withdrawal of the Russian army from the city of Nova Kakhovka, located on the opposite side of the Dnipro River in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine.
Earlier on Thursday, the Ukrainian army said that Russian forces had withdrawn from the city of Nova Kakhovka.
The Ukrainian General Staff said via Telegram, “The occupiers are still temporarily present in Nova Kakhovka. The information about the supposed withdrawal of the enemy from this town was published after incorrect use of the available data.”
Russia denies
- For his part, an official appointed by the Russian authorities in the Kherson region in southern Ukraine denied that the Russian army had withdrawn from the city of Nova Kakhovka.
“I officially announce that all Russian military personnel in Nova Kakhovka, as well as in other areas on the left bank of the Dnipro River, remain in their posts,” Vladimir Saldo said on Telegram.
Zelensky’s visit
- This comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made, on Thursday, his third visit within two days to the areas most affected by the Russian war, in a tour of the Kherson region in the south.
Kherson was recently recovered from the grip of Russian forces.
The big attack is approaching
- A senior commander in Kiev indicated that a Ukrainian counter-offensive was brewing and could happen “very soon”.
Ukraine retook the capital of the Kherson region, also called Kherson, at the end of last year, driving out the Russians who seized the city in the weeks after the start of Russia’s military operation more than a year ago.
The Dnieper River now represents the front line in the region, which is still partially occupied.
