THE ANGELS –
The 75th Emmy Awards, which have been postponed because of the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strike, have a new date, one that places them squarely within Hollywood’s awards season.
Fox announced Thursday that the Emmys will broadcast on January 15 from the Peacock Theater at LA Live in downtown Los Angeles. The gala will air over the long weekend for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
The date means that the Emmys, which honor the best television shows, will air weeks before the SAG Awards, which honor film and television actors. Many other galas like the Golden Globes, which have not been confirmed for a return to broadcast television, and the Critics Choice Awards, also take place in January.
The ceremony will take place approximately four months later than originally planned.
While it’s a change, it’s also a comeback of sorts—the first Emmys, in which only six awards were handed out, were held in January 1949. The ceremony traditionally airs in September, a slot once used to announce upcoming fall TV seasons. But that date goes back to when broadcast television dominated, both in viewership and in Emmy nominees, in a way that has been obliterated by cable television and streaming services.
A person with knowledge of the plans, but not authorized to speak publicly, told The Associated Press last month that the gala, originally scheduled for Sept. 17, would be postponed because of strikes by actors and TV and film writers that are still ongoing. they have no resolution.
HBO is the main channel nominated for the next ceremony, three of its series, “Succession”, “The Last of Us” and “The White Lotus”, accumulate 74 mentions. In total, HBO received 127 nominations.
Due to the strikes, actors and writers are unable to campaign for their shows or do promotional interviews. The writers’ strike marked its 100th day on Wednesday, so it has already lasted longer than the 2007-2008 strike, and there is no end in sight.
No host has been announced for the ceremony, which will celebrate the diamond anniversary of the Emmys.
The gala has become a two-weekend event, with many nominees in the technical and guest acting categories receiving their awards during the Creative Arts Emmys, which take place a week earlier on January 6 and 7. . An edited version of that ceremony will be broadcast on Fox on January 13.
The Emmys will be produced by Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay of Jesse Collins Entertainment. Collins has become a go-to producer for Hollywood award shows and other shows, producing the Grammys, Oscars, and the critically acclaimed 2022 Super Bowl halftime show with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Mary J. Blige in a celebration of hip hop
