The Angel: Ashraf Marwan’s Role in the October War and Mossad’s Revelations

Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the October War, the Israeli intelligence service (Mossad) published a picture of the Egyptian agent nicknamed “The Angel” with his handler, the agent whom Israel said sent an accurate warning to Israel that the war was about to break out.

The Mossad also published a copy of the conversation that took place between the head of the Mossad at the time, Zvi Zamir, and the Egyptian agent, who was later revealed to be Ashraf Marwan, the son-in-law of former Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and an advisor to his successor, Anwar Sadat.

In the black and white photo, Marwan appears wearing a suit and sunglasses, smiling and placing his hand on the shoulder of a person whom Mossad said was the man responsible for him.

According to the newspaperTimes of IsraelMarwan sent a warning to Zamir just one day before the outbreak of the war, in which he said, “There is a 99 percent probability that the war will start tomorrow and it will start simultaneously on the Egyptian and Syrian fronts.”

Marwan Zamir also reported that the Egyptians planned to launch a heavy artillery bombardment and “move almost the entire army across the Suez Canal.”

He also told him that the Syrians were “planning to seize the Golan Heights.”

The newspaper says that political and military leaders in Israel largely ignored these warnings, only to be surprised when the attack began.

The Mossad also announced that a book would be published in honor of the intelligence organization’s role in the Yom Kippur War, detailing how the Mossad revealed many of the Egyptian plans related to the surprise attack before the war.

In a speech on Thursday, current Mossad chief David Barnea denied reports that Marwan was a double agent.

Barnea said, “These allegations were extensively verified before the war by a joint team from the Israeli army and Mossad, and again after the war.”

Marwan died in 2007, after falling from the balcony of his house in London under mysterious circumstances, and left without clarifying whether he was actually an Israeli agent or a double agent.

After his death in London, an official funeral was held for Marwan in Cairo, attended by many senior officials at the time, and his body was wrapped in the Egyptian flag. Egyptian officials deny that he was an Israeli spy.

Ashraf Marwan, who was the husband of Mona Abdel Nasser, the youngest daughter of the former president, worked in the presidential office during the latter’s era and then during the era of Anwar Sadat.
