In the past, many Dutch people lived in the castle. The castle area is now the area of ​​the Fatahilah Museum.

According to the contractor’s archaeological team MRT Jakarta Junus Satrio Atmodjo this aqueduct only supplies water to the people inside the castle of Batavia. Junus estimates that there are about 9-10 thousand people, made up of Dutch and slaves from the local community.

This water conduit was designed around 1730, its construction took a long time, even in 1780 the construction of this water conduit was not completely completed. It was only in the 1800s that this clean water canal could be fully utilized. He said the long construction process was due to waiting for the direct delivery of materials from the Netherlands.

“It is scheduled for 1730, the data is 1755 still being worked, 1780 is still being worked on. The process is long because these bricks were imported from the Netherlands, we can imagine ships passing through here carrying these bricks. Junus told a journalists during a direct visit to the findings of ancient waterways.

In Junus’ presentation, it was explained that in 1730 the VOC planned to anticipate a dirty urban environment by providing clean water from the south of Batavia. One of them is to form a water flow channel.

The end of the pipe would begin at a place called waterplaats in the Pancoran area. This is where clean water is stored and distributed.

This pipeline ran through several important areas at the time, starting with the mayor’s building or stadhuis and also from the castle of Batavia. This canal ends around the fish market.
