The firein the landfill of the Authority for the Sustainable Management of the Amatitlán Basin and Lake (AMSA) is completely controlled and extinguished, said the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction (Conred).
The fire started last Sunday, April 7. As Conred explained, this started on purpose, so a complaint was sent to the Ministry of the Public (MP) to investigate the reasons for what happened.

The fire spread throughout all the platforms of the landfill and caused a lot of smoke, which caused the air in Guatemala City and other points to reach dangerous levels of pollution for citizens.
This pollution even caused the Ministry of Education to stop in-person classes in public and private educational institutions for a week to protect the health of students.
