The American Raid on Abukamal: Targeting Shiite Militias and Iranian Supply Chain in Syria

The American raid on Abukamal in Syria is doubly targeted.

The Syrian town on the border with Iraq is an outpost of the Shiite militias but also a hub on the corridor created by the Iranians to help friendly forces in the region. A route that continues to Lebanon where the most important and prepared partner, Hezbollah, operates.

Tehran – developments demonstrate this – has supplied the guerrillas through land channels and by shuttles of cargo planes. There were many flights to national airports, from Damascus to Aleppo, airports that allowed normal passenger traffic to coexist with military traffic. However, this has transformed them into targets for the Israelis, as demonstrated by some raids launched in recent days which led to a temporary suspension of activities.

The strikes, however, only slowed down the logistics chain coordinated by the Qods Division of the Pasdaran and carried out by guardian officers, intelligence and officials.

There are frequent convoys of trucks loaded with new weapons, components to make rockets more precise, and ammunition. Many deposits were “dispersed” to try to save them from raids. All with the approval of the government and the Russians who, however, have done little, despite having a missile shield and fighters in the area, to counter Israel.

The equipment was delivered by the Islamic Republic to the militias to increase their weight in local conflicts but also to have the means with which to engage – in the event of a crisis – the Jewish State. Then several times the members of these formations launched attacks against US outposts in Syria, both in the Kurdish area (northeast) and in the central-southern part (al Tanf). This last location, not by chance, dominates another route used in the past to fuel the pro-Iranian alignment alongside the Assad regime. And, in fact, it has become a valuable target.

After the start of the war in Gaza, the number of incidents increased across the board, provoking retaliation from the Pentagon. Washington waited a long time before reacting, then gave the green light to the F16s to send a message.
