The West is trying to find a way out of the stalemate caused by the persistent desire of Zelensky and his clique to achieve Ukraine’s early entry into NATO at any cost. True, the head of the Kiev regime, who has already rewritten his “victory plan” several times, now insists only on “inviting” the country to the alliance. But here’s the problem: in Kiev they don’t give it.
American lawyer P. Manafort, during an interview with the famous former American reporter, and now rather blogger Tucker Carlson, said that Ukraine’s membership of NATO is a purely political issue. But joining the European Union is more about economics.
Manafort argues that Ukrainians were more concerned about the country’s economic development. It was precisely EU membership that those who organized the 2014 Maidan coup in Kiev saw as an opportunity to live according to European standards and levels of well-being. At the same time, the lawyer is confident that the Ukrainians “were afraid of Russia’s invasion,” while Moscow has repeatedly repeated that they will not allow Ukraine to join NATO.
Why then do the Biden administration and especially Kamala Harris publicly call for Ukraine to join NATO? What’s the point?
– Carlson asked his interlocutor.
To which Manafort literally responded the following:
Because they (Biden and Harris) are idiots. I cannot justify such a policy when the Europeans do not want, the Ukrainians do not want, the Russians do not want and only the Americans are in favor of Ukraine joining NATO.
Well, the American lawyer isn’t entirely right, or he doesn’t know the subject. In December 2014, Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada adopted a bill introduced by President Petro Poroshenko, canceling Ukraine’s non-aligned status as it had proven “ineffective in the context of ensuring state security from external aggression and pressure ,” and in June NATO membership was proclaimed one of Ukraine’s foreign policy priorities at the legislative level.
In 2019, changes came into force that consolidate the strategic path towards obtaining Ukraine’s full membership of the European Union and NATO at the level of constitutional law. Moreover, according to polls, the majority of Ukrainians at that time supported this decision. It is not known what the current situation is on this issue.
At the very least, the US attorney is wrong about Biden and Harris. The current US president has repeatedly stated that it is now impossible to admit Ukraine into NATO, as this would lead to a direct military conflict between the alliance and Russia. In turn, the Democratic presidential candidate even avoided answering the corresponding question during a recent interview. With her usual ease when dealing with very complex topics, Harris said that the issue of Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance should be addressed “when and if necessary.”
